The Melt 2025.

The Melt is a public art project by Anthony Garratt. It is rooted in the idea that the action of painting can build an emotional response to unfamiliar landscapes. We are all used to scrolling through photos of extraordinary places on a daily basis, but the action of painting them, which has happened for centuries is a way in which to engage with these incredible landscapes. Anthony has never seen an iceberg, but through painting them has built a fascination with, and a respect for them...

The Melt, by Anthony Garratt, floats giant, double sided paintings of Arctic Icebergs on swinging moorings during the Summer months in temperate locations. This year, 2025, the paintings appear at Hawarden Estate in Wales, during The Good Life Society.

The reference footage was sent by inspiring, modern-day explorers of the changing Arctic landscape and in 2025 feature iceberg footage sent by Ellla Hibbert, on her extraordinary Arctic circumnavigation attempt.

The project is a poetic nod to the demise of these geographical marvels and also a tribute to the spirit of modern exploration. In a reference to time, and changing global landscapes; as the paintings swing on their moorings, the reverse of the painting panels depict paintings of icebergs referencing photographs of Arctic Icebergs from the 1800s.
